If you look on the reverse of many of your household products that you use every day, you will see a whole host of chemicals and additives that you had never heard of. One of those is Triclosan, but at O.N.G Natural Bodycare you won’t find this ingredient in any of our products.
An anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agent, Triclosan has been used in a variety of household products including soaps, deodorants, toothpastes – even pesticides, mattresses and laminate flooring – since 1972, but it’s safety for human consumption is anything but certain.
Despite its use in all manner of household products, there are a large number of question marks over its safety.
A 2010 study linked Triclosan consumption in children to the development of allergies, while other studies have linked this compound to allergic contact dermatitis in some people. It also reacts with the free chlorine in tap water to create dioxins, and although only a small amount is produced, some are highly toxic as well as being potent endocrine disruptors.
Triclosan has also met with resistance from major governmental bodies, with the EU refusing to approve its use in plastic food packaging, and the Canadian Medical Association asking the Canadian government to ban Triclosan’s use in household products in 2009.
At O.N.G Natural Bodycare, we can offer a number of Triclosan-free alternatives to products that typically would contain this ingredient. Green People provide an anti-bacterial liquid soap that contains neither Triclosan or SLS, delivering a pure anti-bacterial hand wash, whilst their spearmint and Aloe Vera toothpaste for children is 100% natural – ideal for delicate teeth and gums – and was recommended by Midwives TIPS 2010 as the Best Organic Toothpaste.
