What is Bismuth Oxychloride?
To fully understand why this chemical is used, and why we choose not to use it in our products, you need to get a grasp on exactly what it is. Bismuth Oxychloride is a natural element found at number 83 on the periodic table, it’s one of the only non-toxic heavy metals. It is often found in cosmetics and personal care products because of its white pigments, it has an iridescent quality that reflects light and provides a shimmery finish. When added to mineral makeup it can be attributed to give cosmetics a silky feel; providing higher adhesion so make-up will stick better to your skin.
Why Not to Use It
Whilst Bismuth Oxychloride is often described as a naturally occurring ingredient and indeed it does appear naturally on earth. The levels that it does occur wouldn’t be enough to meet the needs of the cosmetic industry and so it is processed through a complex smelting process of other metals. Firstly, it is close on the periodic table to Arsenic, and this is probably the main reason why many women would choose not to use it, as you won’t want to be putting this on your skin! It has also been reported to cause skin irritation by individuals and to aggravate skin conditions and to make them worse. Furthermore, because it is often found in small particles (especially in foundation) it can cause trouble with your respiratory system.
