Irritating to the Skin
SLS stands for Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and is used as a foaming agent to create the soapy lather you get with shampoos and shower gels. Unfortunately, its affects don’t stop there, and SLS is used around the world as a skin irritant in clinical studies. A study conducted by the Journal of the American College of Toxicology found that SLS had a degenerative effect on the cell membranes. However, this is not the most alarming characteristic of SLS. Carcinogenic nitrosamines can form in the production of SLS or following reaction with other ingredients found within your beauty products, while it has been found to cause changes to the skin when applied directly.
